Issue # 7 - Week of November 18, 2024

Hello Reader,

Online events seem to be winding down, but there are plenty of opportunities to meet in person if there is an active community near you.

There are useful videos and articles this week, but nothing major was announced. So this leaves us (me, mostly) with plenty of thinking space to get work done and put in place some more of the new features that have come out in the last month.

Let's get to it. Here's what happened during the week of November 18, 2024:

πŸ“£ The week's Notion updates

Three things:

1) Notion joined Bsky.

2) You can now connect GitHub to Notion's AI

3) More of Make with Notion's videos have been released and are worth watching. My favourites are Marie Poulin's presentation on Notion as a curiosity engine and Andrew Mason's Build your dream Notion setup (the last 5 minutes will have you laughing)

🎞️ This week's YouTube videos

I didn't think Notion would ever fix this by Thomas Frank Explains (10 minutes)

This is not a tutorial like most of Frank's videos. It's very much his opinion and a good explanation of why database permissions still make Notion a less-than-ideal tool for service providers who want to share things with clients

Live Session: The Future of Notion Consulting by The Notion Coach aka David de CΓ©spedes (28 minutes)

This is a replay of a live workshop. If you are considering going deep into Notion consulting, David gives a good picture of what's possible, where the needs are and what your next steps could be with a sneak peek at some of the lessons from his course.

How does this product design manager use Notion to sustain team culture by Poochjo The Research Co. (45 minutes)

This is a lovely mix of an interview and a demo of Anupriy Kanti's Notion workspace. He thinks about using Notion to build "Playbooks" instead of SOPs to allow for more flexibility so the processes can change and evolve as his team's culture does too.

Notion Forms: More Useful Than You Realised?! + Life OS Upgrade Demo by Better Creating (24 minutes)

Covers everything from the basics of forms to a demo of how you can integrate them into your current system. More specifically, it shows how to use a form for client enquiries, one for idea generation and how to use forms with an existing CRM.

How to focus: 5 Notion settings to be distraction-free by Productive Setups (6 minutes)

Super simple things to try: use the calendar, use buttons, track your time (with formulas), eliminate habit trackers (use templates instead) and integrate your journal into your task database (with a template once again).

πŸŽ™οΈ Podcasts worth a listen

Remember, you can catch all past episodes I've shared via this newsletter on this playlist.

πŸ“‡ Articles published last week

Notion vs. Confluence: Which Tool Is Right for Your Team? by SEO Hub

Not super in-depth, but a quick guide to help decide which tool might work for your team.

Almanac vs. Notion by Nuclino

A bit more depth in this one, simply because there are more images to show the difference between the two tools.

How to Run Code in Notion: A Step-by-Step Guide by Spencer Lanoue for The Bricks

All the steps are clearly explained. Best for those who write code and are already familiar with coding (not for less technical people like me)

How I Use the PARA Method Beyond Notion by Easlo

Very short read, but it's interesting to see what other tools Easlo relies on and how it all comes together.
